My
mom and dad married in 2003. My dad already had one cat named Harley, she
is black as midnight, a domestic shorthair a.k.a. Queen of the House. My mom
and dad wanted to grow the family and they knew Harley needed a friend,
someone to help keep her active. The mission then began to find me, the
newest family member. They knew they wanted to adopt and then searched
Petfinder.com and out of a million sweet faces there I was. I know I wasn't
much then just a skinny little orange kitten. My eyes were as blue as the sea
though and I think that is what caught my moms attention. For that first
picture, I hunched my back when standing on a couch, I was trying to look
tough even though I was so little. My mom said that she knew I was born to be
her best friend just from that one photo. I wasn't far from them at all, only
in Marietta, GA. The night they came to pick me up, I was so busy playing
with all my kitten friends, I made my mom chase me all over the house. Then
all of a sudden my mom picked me up and said she loved me! I was going home
for good!!
I was so glad to be at my new home but I was also scared, such a new place
with so many new sounds and smells. I hid in the guest bedroom for a bit. I
knew there was another cat in the house because I could smell her and she
brought me out to meet Harley a few times. At first I didn't think she liked
me but after a few days, she would groom me and I would groom her. She showed
me the house and what to do during the day when my mom and dad are at work.
As for my name, at first it was Nemo, but then my mom and dad noticed that I
squinted a lot. I would sometime get eye allergies that would need medicine
because one of my little mates stabbed me in the eye. I am a little
cross-eyed but still don't have a problem catching a flying bug when it come
in the house. So the name Squints has just stuck with me. Now it has been
several years since those days.
This has been my hardest year because I got a urinary blockage in April. I
didn't feel well at all and I just couldn't go to the bathroom. My dad knew
immediately something was wrong. They took me to the emergency hospital and
they kept me there for several days. I was so scared by myself but my mom
and dad called and checked on me all the time. One thing I grew to hate was
the E-collar. My mom came and picked me up early one morning and took me to
my regular doctor and I stayed there for another week. They kept me
catheterized the whole time hoping my body would heal itself and I wouldn't need
a surgery. My mom and dad would come visit me and I could feel how sad they
were. It was so hard to be away and I didn't eat well so I lost some weight.
However finally, the doctors plans did work and I started to urinate on my own
again. Things were looking up I knew because I didn't have all these tubes
connected to me. I was so happy to see the carrier box because I knew I was
coming home!
Now things are getting back to normal. I am back with my sister Harley and we
are getting back to our normal routine. I am a little tougher since being in
the hospital. Things that used to scare me like the sound of plastic bags no
longer bother me. However, the lightning still scares me and I crawl
underneath the covers in the middle of the bed. I love to wake up my mom
every morning, she tries to hit the snooze button but once I hear it, I wake
her up by either combing her hair with my claws or placing my paw on her mouth
so she knows I am hungry. After we eat, its time for a nap and then some
playtime after our nap. Its so good to be back home!
