My
wife found Willie almost a year ago sickly and starving after he
appeared one day at a small feral cat colony that we have been helping to
feed. He was so skinny, dirty, and ill (or so we thought), that she was
convinced that she would find that he had died by the time she came back
the next day. But, he was still there the next day, and he very slowly
seemed to improve. And he really bonded with my wife. Finally, after a few
weeks, she decided that regardless of the current capacity at our house,
that she couldn't leave William out to fend for himself anymore. She
scooped him up one day and took him to the vet, fully expecting that he
would test positive for FeLV or FIV. He didn't. In fact, he had no health
problems at all, other than he was nearly dead from starvation when she
found him. Although he had rebounded to a small degree, he weighed about
nine pounds at that first vet visit, and he is a fairly large cat. My wife
estimated that he may have been as thin as seven pounds when she first
found him.
After a good bathing and grooming (he was filthy, and covered in some kind
of grease or oil), and a lot of love and food (is there a difference,
especially to a cat - or a man, LOL?), he has turned into a beautiful,
happy, healthy cat. In fact, after all of that worry about his weight when
he was found, at the last doctor visit, Willie weighed over seventeen
pounds! (He may have to go on a diet!) He loves playing under the running
faucet, and he loves wrestling with his friend Louis. Willie has
brightened up our home with his quirky personality, and his turnaround
from legitimately being near death, to being a robust and healthy friend
of ours. The "before" and "after" pictures of William will give you an
idea of how he was, and what he's become. So far, Willie is one of the
success stories.
