Chance
was just six weeks of age when rescue was called for him by Anchorage
Animal Control in February 2009. There had been several weeks of ten to
twenty below temperatures and he had found his way into a warehouse. Just a
ball of fuzz with eyeballs, he weighed in at a mere nine ounces. Dehydrated,
starving and severely frostbitten, this kitten endured more in his short
start in life them most cats experience in a lifetime. Though his future was
uncertain, I decided to give this kitten a second chance in life, even after
the vet said "Cindy, I wouldn't get too attached if I were you."
All of Chance's feet were frostbitten, his left ear and his tail. The vet was
quite concerned over his feet and we didn't know what to expect. A treatment
plan was decided and he had weekly vet visits to determine how his healing was
going and what the next step would be. The vet wanted him to get stronger and
put on some weight before he would consider surgery on his feet. Chance was a
fighter, a great sport and basked in his newfound life. He loved his little
pink heating disc and spent most of his time sleeping on it. The other cats
seemed to sense he was a special needs kitten and would curl up next to him
and mother him like he was one of their own.
He had to have this special cream massaged into his feet and tail twice a day,
and though his feet were extremely sensitive, he was very cooperative and
seemed to sense it was for his own good. The weeks turned into months and
Chance's treatment went very well. With the exception of his front two thumbs,
he lost the rest of his toes and part of his feet, half of one ear and half of
his tail, all without ever having surgery. The vet is amazed at how well
Chance did and said this was the worst case of frostbite he had ever seen.
Chance hops like a rabbit and doesn't jump up and down off things like most
cats do. He can scale cat poles and get up and down off the bed with the help
of a stool. He is one of the happiest cats I have ever seen and he doesn't
let his handicap stop him from doing much of anything. He is always in a good
mood. Chance plays with the dogs and cats and has his favorite toys. He is
spoiled rotten and has turned out to be quite the lover. Chance turns one
year old in about a week and I can't imagine what life would be like without
him. He is one of my best little buddies.
