Nigel,
named because of the regal streak of white that is on his chest, is an
incredibly loving cat, but he did not start out that way. His mother was a
stray neighborhood cat, and we took Nigel in to give him a better life.
Initially, he hissed and swatted constantly at us. He even tried to hide from
us, sneaking his way behind the kitchen cabinets to look for an escape route.
But after a few weeks of showing him how much we loved him, he came to love us
back.
Nigel, unlike his sisters, always wants to be around the people he loves. He
greets me promptly when I come home, rubbing against my legs, or rolling onto
his back to get his belly petted. He enjoys playing with his jingly balls,
and will chase after them into the kitchen, play soccer with them, then carry
them back to me in his mouth. He also likes to play with his sisters and will
beckon them to come and play with him with a loud howl that echoes through the
house. He will take out any toy that he wants to play with from his toy box.
However, he has a bad habit of playing with his toy mice near the furniture so
there about twenty mice under the couch at any given time. When playtime is over
and naptime begins, Nigel climbs up his cat tower to sleep in his bed that is
perched eight feet from the floor.
He loves to be held and kissed and will climb onto my mother's lap and lay his
head on her shoulder, trying to take the place of her two cats of 16 years
that passed away recently. He is also a pest when she is trying to crochet
and the yarn is under his foot or in his mouth, the string too tempting for
him to ignore. Nigel is most relaxed when it is raining outside and he can
see the drops washing over the skylight. He is also a little ham, and poses
for pictures any time the camera is out, happy to show off his cute white
nose.
Nigel is a wonderful cat and I couldn't be happier that we gave him a chance
to be loved because he returns every bit of it.
