Abby
came to me at the lowest point in my life. My marriage of twenty-eight
years had just broken up, and I had volunteered to help socialize the cats at
the pound. Abby had come in very damaged, both physically and mentally, and
it was apparent she would never be socialized enough for adoption.
For some reason she reacted to me. Maybe because we were both hurting and she
felt it. Because she allowed me to handle her they let me take her home.
Over the years we became very close. After seven years she suddenly developed
a new habit. She would press her nose into my breast and then bite at it. It
shocked me, but after the third time it happened, I thought I should maybe
check it out, since my sister had died of Breast Cancer.
Abby's warning saved my life. I was in the next to last stage cancer, a fast
growing one that we caught just soon enough, thanks . One night she woke me at two in
the morning, and I heard someone trying to open my back door just outside my
bedroom window. Looking out the window I saw a strange male trying to force
my door. When he heard the blinds rattle on the window he turned to see me
and a fluffed out Halloween cat hissing at him. He ran.
She was my guardian, my friend, my companion and I miss her terribly. She got
cancer of the esophagus that wasn't operable. She was eleven years old.
I will never have as good, or as faithful, a friend, and I miss her.
