This
is Pinny, the love of my life. She was brought into a no-kill
shelter I was volunteering at, a victim of a very cold winter (in early
2004) that claimed her ear tips and tail but not her indomintable spirit.
She was not considered cute and therefore several months passed and
still no one wanted her. But whenever I came near her cage she started
to purr, no matter how badly she was feeling (she also had peritonitis).
And she loved to be held - no claws - she settled right into my arms.
Needless to say, she found her forever home with me. I had another older
male Maine Coon at home and, although they don't exactly love each
other, he allows her to be the boss, which suits her just fine.
Pinny is the most intelligent little cat. She is an intrepid explorer.
She has such a curiosity for absolutely everything and is the first to
get right in and explore: suitcases, boxes, drawer chests, washing
machine, or the dryer. We have to be careful to check where she is before we
close anything. She loves rubber bands and twist ties so we have to
store these securely. She knows how to open the cabinet doors above my
bathroom sink and likes to "clear the shelves" to see if there's
anything interesting to play with. So I have to keep the door closed.
She is fearless and sometimes her insatiable curiosity can get her into
trouble. Several times she has shot past us out the side door, ready to
take on the world. Fortunately it leads to an attached garage and,
after she's left her little "Pinny prints" all over the car, she'll take
us up on our invitation to come back into the nice warm house.
That isn't to say that she doesn't enjoy her toys. Her favorite is her
pink elephant which she carries all over the house while proudly
meowing/yelling. Many times she'll leave her prized elephant at my
bathroom door if I'm in there too long and haven't let her in. Then I
feel like a heel.
She loves having breakfast with my husband. They share a daily morning
ritual whereby she sits on his lap while I prepare her and her brother's
breakfast and sees how much cereal soaked in milk she can extort from
him before rushing to her own food.
Although she is the first to greet guests and the first to visit any lap
that allows her, she is definitely my little girl. She follows me
around the house like a dog. When I work on the computer she insists on
lying on my lap. When I'm not feeling well she is always there to just
lay down beside me (or on me) and soothe me with her purring that says
"Everything will be all right."
I feel blessed to have this special little cat in my life and I love her
so much.
