On
a winter Sunday morning, I opened the newspaper and read a plea from the
local Humane Society to adopt a cute gray tabby cat. They said she'd been
found as a stray, but after three months of living in a cage, she still had
not been adopted. I felt so sorry for her that I went right in to have a look.
"What's wrong with her?" I asked the volunteer. "She's very sweet, so why
hasn't anyone claimed her?" They had no idea. Kitty certainly was friendly and
talkative. And she resembled a rescue cat I'd lost to the pet food
contamination scandal a couple of years ago.
So I brought her home and named her Allegra, but I call her Allie Cat. I
fully expected her to take a while to socialize with me, but by that
evening, she was sleeping on my bed and talking up a storm. She loves to
sit on window sills, chase balls, wrestle with her catnip toy, and sleep.
When I pet her, she says, "Maaa!" I think that means I've become her
mother! How appropriate. And funny enough, my birth sign is Leo the Lion!
