We
adopted Hazel (a.k.a. "Gertie") fourteen years ago, from a shelter
where a sign reading "This Cat is Very Friendly" had been posted on her
cage. She is indeed very sociable, and very intelligent. It didn't take
Hazel long to recognize that we needed constant direction in our lives,
most notably daily insistence to get out of bed (otherwise we might sleep
all day) and reminders to fill her dinner dish (otherwise we might
forget). She has developed a vocabulary ranging from "Good morning" to
"How about a treat?" to "Get the lead out!"
Hazel likes to venture out in the front yard to scout for chipmunks or to
watch the neighbors and their pets, but a gust of wind or an approaching
big truck sends her scrambling for the door. She is so intent on being in
the center of the action that we've developed a number of creative dance
steps in our efforts to avoid stepping on her tail. Hazel has soldiered on
the past year and a half without her companion Midas (aka "Little Guy",
adopted from the same shelter on the same day), whom she obviously misses,
and whose sudden disappearance she has never understood. We feel blessed
to have had such loving pets for so many years, and we surely cherish
every day that we are able to spend with our very friendly cat.
