Halli
is very special to us because she so very nearly wasn't here at all,
a number of times. First of all her mother abandoned her on the banks of a
canal in County Offaly in Ireland whilst her eyes were not even open.
Thankfully some good soul found her and took her to a lovely lady who
takes in waifs and strays and the like. This kind lady bottle fed the tiny
kitten until she was old enough to be fostered by an old black cat who had
milk left over. We adopted Halli from there when she was about six weeks
old and brought her home on the eve of Halloween - this is how she came by
her name. Such a long drive home on a wet windy wild night and she looked
so small in the carrier, but as soon as she was released in her new abode
she made herself at home with a saucer of milk and some food! She never
looked back!
Halli's second try at doing away with one of her nine lives was when she
was aged fifteen months by falling off a roof (which is our vet's best
guess) and shattering her jaw. She spent a month over Christmas in the vet
hospital whilst the wonderful staff carried out two operations and tube
fed and cared for her night and day. We visited daily and the nurses and
students praised Halli's wonderful spirit and manner as she allowed them
to do anything they needed without protest. Halli just loved everyone and
put up with anything they needed to do. The result is she lost a part of
her jaw and she has a slightly lopsided "goofy" appearance from some
angles - but her wonderful personality still shines through. She always
looks you directly in the eye when you speak to her and loves attention.
Since then Halli has undergone a number of "adventures" and we suspect she
is currently working on about life number 5! She is the light of our
lives, along with our Jack Russell Terrier with whom she shares lots of
games. Halli is always "flat out" either dashing about (and we really
think that her broken jaw was the result of some harum scarum escapade) or
resting. Her favorite games are playing with palm fronds from the garden,
climbing her scratching posts and chasing any small items we throw for
her. She loves to sleep in her "cave" or on the foot of our bed, and every
morning without fail she wakes us up by walking along our bodies up the
bed to our pillows, purring, to headbutt us until we scratch around her
head and neck. Some mornings she settles down for another snooze wrapped
around my head and other times she keeps headbutting and pulling our hands
with ever so gentle paws until we provide food.
