It was the dead of winter, and I had just gone through a messy breakup
and, against better judgment, I let my ex keep the cat that we had
bought together. As I searched for a new home, I knew that I wouldn't
feel right in a new place unless I had another cat in my life. I had
never really seriously considered getting a sphynx before, but at the
prompting of a friend, I started researching the breed and looking at
available kittens. The search commenced, and within a week, I found
"Jack." As the runt of the litter, Angelic Sphynx cattery was offering him
at a reduced price because of an eye injury (something he probably had
since birth), and I knew from the moment I saw him, that he was the cat
meant for me. When I brought him home in February, we spent the first
night in a tent, in the middle of the floor of my new (but still empty)
apartment, and I knew I had done something right. I named him Abraham
Lincoln, after the 16th president, because I felt he deserved a name
with some history behind it. As a later fact, I discovered that Abe's
birthday was on 12/2, where President Lincoln's birthday was on 2/12!
Anyone who meets Abe in person knows why I gush about him so much. He's
very clownish, and affectionate, and nothing seems to worry him at all.
Car trips, vet visits, pet store runs, he takes them all with ease. He
seems to hold affection for every one of my friends, and he and my
roommate's cat, Lestat, have a typical brother-type relationship. It's
great seeing them get along. I, however, seem to remain Abe's favorite.
Every night he insists on being under the covers with me, he'll sit on
my lap or shoulder while doing homework, and he'll meow when I shut him
out of the bathroom. I have never had such a loving, loyal, affectionate
cat. He amazes me every day. Aside from contributing to his good looks,
Abe's eye doesn't bother him at all, though it is kind of funny seeing
him bump into things now and then. There's no denying it, he's an
incredible cat, and I'm glad such tough circumstances could have led me
to encounter such a curious and wonderful creature.
