Hobbes, the Cat of the Day
Name: Hobbes
Age: Six years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Domestic Shorthair
Home: Baltimore, Maryland, USA

When I got my first apartment, I knew I wanted to get a cat. Having grown up with lots of pets, I missed having one around. I made the journey down to the BARCs shelter in Baltimore to search for a cat, not sure of what I would find. As a shelter employee showed me around, I saw lots of adorable kittens who were getting adopted left and right. In their cages, the adult cats waited patiently - they weren't as small and cute as the kittens, and were being overlooked. In the last room of cages, I saw Hobbes sitting quietly in his cage, watching two employees examining another cat. As I bent down to talk to him, he stuck his paw through the bars and grabbed my fingers. I was in love!

I brought him home that day, and he was thrilled to get out of a cage and into my apartment. He had been waiting in the shelter for many months due to his age. He inspected every room, closet and cupboard, then flopped down on the couch, purring loudly. He was so happy to finally be home!

Hobbes has proved to be a great companion in the few months I've had him. When I wake in the morning, he's so excited he races up and down the hallway, chirping and batting at his toys. When I get home from work he always wants to be held and scratched, and is content to hang out and be a couch potato. He always asks for his canned food right a 5:30 - he knows when it's time for his daily treat! He also has a strange affinity for the bathtub. He likes to sleep in there, especially after I've taken a shower and it's damp. I've never seen a cat that likes water so much! If I turn on the faucet, he'll lick at the stream of water like it's a fountain.

Hobbes lives up to his namesake - the friendly, witty tiger in the comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes" - and is a great friend to me. He's a great example of why adopting a rescued cat, especially an adult one, can be so rewarding!
