My
wonderful new friend has truly earned his name of Lucky. He came
to us about eight months ago when he appeared at my son's
workplace. Unwanted and unloved, he was apparently dropped off at my
son's work-site. The uncaring people thinking that he might be taken in
by the people that work there. Unknown to these uncaring people and
especially to my son, he was not wanted at his drop-off site either. He
was starved and refused entry into any place of shelter during the long
cold winter nights. My son would sneak food to him hoping against hope
to give him at least a full belly during the long nights. Since my son
is a night worker, he would also sneak Lucky into his work place warming
him up before having to send him back out into the cold, fearing getting
caught by a supervisor.
Unfortunately, sneaking him inside was not the best idea because Lucky
would try to enter when other people were working and this was met by
unbelievable cruelty when Lucky was kicked so hard it sent him up and
over a porch railing cracking several ribs. After relating this story to
me from my son, he also stated that his employer was "tired" of the cat
hanging around and had recruited another employee to bring in his
shot-gun to "get rid" of Lucky.
Unwilling to hear or handle any more abuse of this poor animal, I
instructed my son to take our animal carrier immediately to his
workplace and retrieve this defenseless animal.
For about a month, Lucky slept under my son's desk in his bedroom,
mending from cracked ribs and major starvation. Very leery of any
people, he was at first very hard to touch and would shy away from
anyone that tried to get near him. If you were lucky enough to touch
him, anything touched below his neckline was met with severe biting and
clawing. He wasn't named "Lucky" until he came to live with us being
called nothing more than a Nuisance before. We truly feel he was and
will forever be "Lucky" for finding his way to our home.
He is now fat and happy with a beautiful gray coat. He loves nothing
more than a warm chair to curl up in and a full dish of food to munch
on. When called, he will come running and jump on our laps laying his
head on our chests and waiting to get petted by quiet, gentle hands.
Hands he has learned no longer hold pain for him. He has adjusted to
our other three cats and even enjoys rubbing around our Black Lab, but tries
to avoid encounters with our Shih Tzu. He enjoys his days laying on our
patio in the sun and knows that he now has a comfortable, quiet home
that affords him the comfort he so desperately wanted and needed. Lucky
is is our survivor and our new friend.
