I
adopted Harley from a no-kill shelter three years ago. When I went in
to meet the cats and sat down on the cat room floor, she climbed into my
lap, dug her claws into my knee, then looked up at me and batted her
eyes as if to say, "This lap is mine!" When I came back later in the
day to pick her up (after a mad dash to the pet store to get ready), she
climbed into the cat carrier all by herself. I guess she knew it was
time to go home!
The shelter's records put her age at around seven when I adopted her, so
she's around ten now, but she is still very active for a ten-year-old cat.
At some point most nights you can spot her rocketing from room to room,
wrestling with her catnip sock, or attacking her string-on-a-stick. The
rest of the time she can be found sleeping in a variety of places: on
the computer monitor, on a cardboard box, on the couch, on the bed, on
the bookshelf, on the dining room table placemats (bad cat!) She also
loves to sleep on a nice warm human, and isn't above meowing at me at
4 AM, trying to get me to roll over so that she can sleep on my stomach.
Harley has very soft fur and is very easy to pet. She is also an
extremely talkative cat who will carry on conversations with anyone who
walks up to her, looks her in the eye and says hello. She'll even give
a reflexive, semiconscious meow if someone pets her as she's sleeping.
I don't think I've ever known a cat who talks as much as she does.
She's a great kitty and I look forward to lots more years with her.
