Kahlo, the Cat of the Day
Name: Kahlo
Age: Five years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Calico
Home: Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Kahlo Lorraine (her friends know her as the Fluffinator, Baby Cat, and Kahlo Baby) is a great cat. She works very hard maintaining stability in her home. Her job as head female cat consists of waking me up to feed her, cleaning her bowl (and that of her cat partner, Paws, if he's otherwise occupied), flattening all paper bags or papers with her 14 lbs and supervising the creation of all sandwiches that includes lunch meat. Of course sleeping, looking out of windows (she prefers the indoors) and stealing the spot where you were just sitting are part of the job description.

She deserves to be Cat of the Day, because she does her job so well. We want everyone to see how beautiful she is, especially her grey nose, one of her best features. Of course, anyone named after two famous people (the painter Frieda Kahlo and the playwright Lorraine Hansberry), is bound to be very artistic. Kahlo has been known to sing, usually when she's by herself in another room. We'll hear these plaintive songs, but they stop as soon as we come in the room. As far as we can tell, most of her songs are odes to her food bowl.

Kahlo has many athletic abilities, including, acting as goalie in cat ice hockey. In this game, we slide ice cubes across a slick wooden floor towards her. She attacks the ice, so it can't get past her. This game requires a lot of energy, at least for us people! She doesn't go after anything that's more than a foot away, and she doesn't return the ice. She yells at us to go get it. Oh well. Paper bag boxing is another favorite sport. All new paper bags must pass the Kahlo test. This means Kahlo takes up residence inside the bag and, while we trace a feather or other object on the outside, Kahlo attacks the item from the inside. So far, no bags have survived her assaults for more than a couple of hours. Once they fail the Kahlo test (and they all do), all paper bags are used for cat naps. Last, her athletic endeavors include encouraging me to run. She likes to lay on my sweaty running shoes, when I come back from my runs. Weird, but true.

Kahlo also deserves this honor, because she puts up with the humiliation of being shaved in the summer. Even though she seems to like having a lighter coat for the season, she doesn't like the process of making it happen. The pay off (for us) is seeing how slim she looks (by comparison to her winter coat). Because of the way the groomers shaves her, it looks like she has on go-go boots! But that just confirms what I already knew, Kahlo is one hep cat!
