Taj
was a breeder's cat and is still learning about being around people.
He treats people as if they were other cats. His antics include hiding
on us and then ambushing us as we walk down a hallway. When he wants to
play, he will also run full-speed at us, leap from the floor and try to
tackle us! Living with Taj is never boring!
About two years ago, I opened my front door to get the morning paper.
Laying on my doormat was the most unusual looking cat I'd ever seen.
He was shivering violently and curled into a ball, laying on his side.
I bent down to get a better look at him and discovered he'd been mauled
by a dog. Because of the way he was acting, I was sure he was close to
dying. I scooped him up and held him close and his shivering stopped
almost immediately. When I brought him inside the house, he began to
purr. I called my vet and was able to get him seen right away. My vet
said the poor cat was in shock, but not injured badly. I'd known Taj
was special and unusual when I'd first seen him and my vet told me he
looked to be a purebred Bengal of very high quality. He was not
neutered and had absolutely no "street smarts".
My vet deduced Taj had probably been a permanent fixture in a cattery
either as a stud, or as a showcat since he seemed to be used to handling
in the way show cats are handled. I asked my vet to test him for feline
diseases as I have several other cats and could not take a chance on
making mine sick. Thankfully, all tests came back negative so I asked
my vet to neuter Taj because I wanted to adopt him. My vet did not want
to do the neuter. He wanted to buy Taj from me instead for $500! I
turned down my vet's offer. I thought this incredibly beautiful cat
deserved a chance at a normal life - not a life cooped up in cages.
Taj's adjustment to normal living was at times hysterical and
hair-raising! It was evident he'd never played with people or other
cats before. Many scratches, broken knick-knacks, and feline skirmishes
later, Taj finally began to settle down. His levels of energy and
mischief were still a little hard to take when my boyfriend and Taj met.
I have never seen a person and a cat more well-suited to each other.
Carl has the patience and good humor needed to handle Taj. Carl also
has another cat, Boogie, who is pretty much Taj's equal when it comes to
the rough-housing. Taj found the perfect home and Carl found the
perfect cat.
