I
take care of two feral cat communities in our area - seven days a week
- rain or shine. I trap, spay or neuter, and return them to their
"homes". One community lives in a storm drain where I work. I had
thought I had trapped all the females, but unfortunately, one of the
females got pregnant and had little ones. Just after July 4th last
year, I fed the cats and was walking down the parking lot when I heard
very loud screams coming from in front of the bushes. I looked down and
there was a little gray bundle - eyes closed - ears folded over - but
with good lungs!
I tried to return her to her mother, but she wasn't interested so I
immediately took her to our vet. She was about five days old and weighed
just under 5 ounces. Our vet was overloaded with kittens and could not
care for her. They give me instructions how to care for her - which
included feeding every four hours! I also looked on the Internet and
found valuable information on orphan kittens and was on my way to
hand-raising this little munchkin. In this picture, she is four weeks old -
it's one of the few clear ones I have because she is always moving!
Since she was found around July 4th weekend, her name is appropriately
"Betsy Ross". She wasn't expected to live at all, but be the time she
was two months old, she was terrorizing our other three cats. At first
my husband said no more cats - however, she stole his heart and now has
her fur-ever home. Betsy is one lucky little one and we love her.
