I
got Shpot when she was just a baby. She stayed with me through two
boyfriends and three states. When I lived in Atlanta, she would ride loose
in the car up to Pennsylvania when I went home for holidays. On the way
back, she somehow knew when we'd pulled into the apartment complex where
we lived.
When I adopted another cat (Walker), Shpot became her surrogate mother.
They would sleep curled up together and Shpot would hold down Walker's
head and lick it clean. Eventually, Walker would head-butt Shpot to get
a cleaning.
When I became engaged to someone who was allergic to cats, my parents
gave them a home. They lived with my parents for five years. During that
time, Shpot became old and cranky, and no longer liked having Walker
around. Now I'm divorced, Mom and Dad are in assisted living, Shpot is
with them and Walker is with me. Shpot is happy as a clam in their
apartment with no other cat. She has her spots, including a box of
clothes, her cat bed next to Dad's side of the bed, and the shower! She
even laid in there on day while Mom was showering!
At 18, she's thinner than she used to be, and has a sensitive stomach,
but otherwise is happy-go-lucky, still rolls over when I pet her, and
tells Dad when it's time for bed. We think she's going to live forever.
