Blewbury
is the name of a village in Britain, and fit as a name for my
round, plush little British Blue kitten, even if many people mistakenly
thought his name was Blueberry.
Blewbury started out in a house with three other cats, who promptly
informed him that he was bottom cat in the pecking order. He was a shy
cat, seldom shining above the others although he occasionally surprised
us all. When a mouse got into the house, Kobbo the "top" cat and
excellent hunter chased it behind a door. The mouse made a daring
escape by running between Kobbo's paws and underneath him. Blewbury saw
this and pounced on the mouse a few feet away while Kobbo, having not
seen the mouse escape, could not be convinced to leave the spot he had
last seen the mouse. Another time, a tough neighborhood cat was
bullying all of our cats, but when the two met, Blewbury let out such a
tremendous scream that it scared away the other cat, who continued to be
scared of Blewbury and didn't come around our place much after that.
When I graduated, and moved from home I took Blewbury with me and he
flourished as an "only cat", becoming much more relaxed even when we
frequent returned back for visits. He was much more confident and
relaxed around visiting dogs and children.
His health had been deteriorating over the past few months, and I
recently had to make the decision that all pet owner's dread and had
Blewbury euthanized to end his suffering a month shy of his 15th
birthday. He was with me through two university degrees, three homes,
and four jobs, was a great cat, family member, and friend. He will be
sorely missed.
