I
never really liked cats before I met Dusty. But when I decided to get
a pet and knew that I didn't have the time or the space to take care of
a dog properly, friends encouraged me to try a cat. Now, I can't
imagine being without her. Dusty is a friendly, playful social
butterfly. She loves running out into the hall of my apartment building
at any opportunity and, if possible, into neighbor's apartments (I've
met almost everyone on my floor, and their pets, because of Dusty). She
loves to fetch and play hide and seek, and every day, without fail,
she'll "hunt" down her little toy animals that I have hidden around the
apartment and pile them up in her food dish. I don't know if she thinks
they're hungry, or her food for later, but they're in the dish when I
get home. She loves jumping in boxes and bags, and one of her favorite
toys right now is the little piece of reinforced cardboard that you get
when you tear open an overnight mail envelope. She can play with that
thing for hours. And, now that it's getting colder, she likes to relax
on top of the floor heater that runs under the window, and rest her head
on the control knob. She's a great jumper as well - tiny (only 7 pounds,
10 ounces), but strong! I'm 5'10" and she easily jumps from the floor
right on to my shoulder. It's hard to leave the apartment because she
cries as soon as I walk into the hall, but when I come home, she runs
right to the door and starts meowing like crazy until I fumble through
the locks and get to her. Then purrs and cuddles like she's been alone
for a week. She is such a special little girl!
