Our
cat Simon (he's the orange and white one here) was the best cat in
the whole entire world! We adopted him from our local animal shelter
over a year ago and he has been an important part of our family ever
since. He was absolutely the sweetest kitty you'd ever meet - he always
wanted to snuggle up on somebody's lap. He also loved other cats, as you
can see above, here he is giving his best friend Punky a bath. These two
were inseparable, always snuggling and playing together.
Unfortunately Simon was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis
(FIP) last week and had to be put to sleep. FIP is a truly devastating
disease and you don't know that your cat has it until it is too
late. We had never heard of FIP until Simon was diagnosed with it,
had we known that Simon was at risk for the disease we would have had
him vaccinated for it. Risk factors for FIP include cats that are raised
in a multi-cat household, originated from a shelter, or spend some of
their time outdoors. FIP usually strikes cats that are under two years of
age or over fourteen. Symptoms include a swollen abdomen, loss of appetite,
and lethargy. Unfortunately FIP is highly contagious and we are just
praying that our other three cats do not develop the disease. We want
to urge everyone out there to have their cat vaccinated against FIP,
especially if they meet any of the risk factors. FIP is a horrible
disease and if getting the word out about Simon saves at least one other
cat then his death will not be in vain.
We love you Simon and we miss you!
