My
cat was born about Christmas 2000. She is a short haired
tortoiseshell of unknown breed. Born to a litter of six, only three
survived the cold before the original owners found her. She was given
to a relative of ours to become a barn cat. Every time this person went
into the barn he found the friendly little tortie at his heels.
Meanwhile I had been putting out food for a stray cat that had gone
under my porch. I put out more than $40 worth of Fancy Feast trying to
attract this cat. Every morning the food would be gone. Finally I got a
glimpse of my adopted 'cat'. It turned out to be an opossum! All the
family knew how disappointed I was. The relative who had the friendly
kitten offered it to me at a family gathering. When I told my husband
that I would name her "Possum" if we could keep her, the whole family
laughed and began calling her Possum. He had to let me take her home.
She is as much his cat as mine. Possum wrote a poem - it goes like
this:
Smartest Kitty In The World
I may not be the prettiest of Kitty Cats around,
But I am the smartest Kitty in the land!
I have people who do everything, prepare my bed and food.
And when I act real cute they even feed this cat by hand!
There is nothing on my schedule almost any given day -
Except for visits to the Vet for health.
So I follow both my people everywhere they go,
Unless they leave, and then I'm by myself.
I cannot fly, but I do catch birds,
And I bring home little mice and moles and such!
I give them to my people, as little Cat surprises
My Dad is proud, but not my Mom so much!
I have a door to come and go - my Freedom is important,
The fact that I can go is why I stay.
The other Kitties follow me and try to eat my goodies,
But my people chase the other Cats away.
So, I may not be the prettiest of Kitty Cats in town,
And pedigrees and ribbons - I have none!
But I AM the smartest Kitty in the Whole Wide World
And I wouldn't trade my life with anyone.
