This
is Tadpole, our little love of a cat who came to live with us in a
rather unusual fashion. My father-in-law, Willie, was deer hunting deep
in the woods one cold day last December when he crossed paths with
Tadpole, who was very young and tiny at the time. Instead of running
away, Tadpole calmly clambered up Willie's leg, hip and arm, all the way
up to his shoulder. Willie is not necessarily fond of cats but could not
help being charmed by this brave little imp so he carried him out of the
woods. When he came to his truck, he plucked the kitten from his
shoulder and set him on the ground, but when he opened the door to his
truck, the kitten immediately jumped inside the cab and looked at him as
if to say, "Let's go home!" Willie and my mother-in-law were worried
because they have two big, boisterous dogs but Tadpole was not the least
bit intimidated. In fact, he soon began playing with the dogs!
My husband, who had previously and firmly drawn the line at our one dog,
two cats, bird and big aquarium, amazed me by suggesting we add him to
our household so we brought him home on Christmas Day and he immediately
began livening things up. He's entranced by the fish in the aquarium and
sometimes gets so excited trying to "catch" them through the glass that
he tumbles off the barstool and he likes to show off when people come
over by skyrocketing past their feet, across the front yard and up into
our elm tree. He loves to play with Margaux, our American Eskimo, and
they make us laugh out loud when they play-fight. He is super-friendly
and especially likes to visit the kindergarteners at recess at the
elementary school across the street from our house. In fact we often get
a knock on the door and find a child on the stoop asking if Tadpole can
come out and play. My daughter accuses him of having more friends in our
neighborhood than we do! He entertains us in so many ways and we're
happy he's part of our family.
