I
unfortunately suffered a stroke this year, and having moved to Texas
without my fourteen-year-old dog was dealing with that loss as well.
While I was recovering, my good friend suggested that I think about
adopting a cat from a shelter. We searched for hours and I was about to
give up when I noticed a homemade award ribbon attached to the outside
of a cage. It read, "Best Kitten." The adoption information sheet stated
that she was part of a litter and was now about ten months old. I gave
the sleeping, curled-up ball of fuzz a nudge and a very cute face poked
out and started purring. Of course I fell in love immediately. After a
few days with this loving cat I came up with the name Cricket. This was
due to the hip-hoppy movement she makes when wrapping herself in between
my legs as I walk, and the singsong voice she uses to talk to me (all
the time!).
After going back to work I realized that poor Cricket was very
lonely while I was gone. A woman I work with had a cat that gave birth
to seven kittens that she was going to give up for adoption, including a
beautiful white one. After visiting the little darlings I knew that
Winter was for us. These two crazy critters are night and day, Cricket's
mellow and Winter's heck on four paws, but they have a great time
playing together. Between the two of them I am constantly loved, hugged,
amused and entertained.
P.S. - A huge and deserving thank you to all the folks who
volunteer/work at animal adoption centers!
